Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside France's air force in a joint strike on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the IS group, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, located using surveillance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was positioned in hills just north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a number of access tunnels down to the facility... initial indications indicate the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the strike on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced militant control over large swathes of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action demonstrates British leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with our partners, to stamp out any revival of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the minister remarked.

RAF aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of IS following its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank the personnel of the UK armed forces involved in this strike for their skill and their courage," he commented. "Including them were numerous UK service members stationed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to eliminate militants who endanger our safety, demonstrates how our armed forces are ready to step up, all year round, protecting the UK within its borders and powerful internationally."

In December, the US military conducted what it termed a "large-scale strike" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, following an attack claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN estimates Daesh still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in both countries.
