The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States against five Europeans involved in combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures that were central to efforts to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
