Fed Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty

The United States central bank lowered borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second reduction in the current year amid economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve

The decision to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Changes

In a announcement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Inflation has risen and remains moderately high.”

Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job

The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve usually studies labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, including the number of new jobs added to the market and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in August.

The number of jobs created to the economy in August was down by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.

Private Data Show Ongoing Slowdown

Though the bureau was scheduled to release last month’s employment data in early October, it halted its publication when the closure started. Private payroll firm ADP indicated recently that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a indication that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, a trend he had earlier said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Moderate Rise

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still issued its price statistics for last month that showed that prices are rising, although gradually. Prices increased 3% over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In April, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
