In a notable development ahead of next year's national polls, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the wake of widespread and deadly youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Address Young People's Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the issues highlighted by the new generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.

"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.

The late summer revolt was triggered by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Details of the New Electoral Partnership

According to the formal pact, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political leadership. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in forming the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.

Wider Government Discussions Underway

In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend held meetings with a number of leading political leaders. These discussions included former prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the protests.

After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a shared duty. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and open environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
