Patients Discontinuing Slimming Jabs Put On Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis indicates that people who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who halt conventional lifestyle programs.

Research printed in a leading medical journal points out that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"People using such drugs must be cognizant of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain suggests a return to original mass within about 18 months.

Weighing Treatments

The analysis, which reviewed dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Researchers emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally have a slower creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Explaining the Quick Regain

Experts suggest the way of the drugs explains the heightened rebound.

The injections mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Condition?

The NHS suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, given the high risk of relapse, the therapy is often ongoing.

This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "emphasize the chronic nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Testimonies

People who have discontinued the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"It was like a trigger activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled an individual.

This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Growing Interest

Recent estimates show that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest remaining high.

  • Adoption is more common among women compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, experts stress that while these medications are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and long-term success relies on ongoing behavioural management.
